GOMA SET TO LEAVE

NEWCASTLE UNITED'S French defender Alain Goma has handed in a transfer request to the club.

Goma had originally wanted to leave in August but was told to stay because of the Magpies' injury problems, but now he will be allowed to leave if they can recoup the £4.5 million they paid Paris Saint Germain for him in 1999.

The 28-year-old now joins Marcelino who seems certain to leave St James' Park as Bobby Robson tries to bring in his type of players to the club.

"We cannot tolerate any players who do not want to play for us," Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told the Evening Chronicle.

"And if players don't shape up then we must ship them out."

Goma could play in the Worthingon Cup fourth round tie against Birmingham City on Wednesday, but it seems that he could be putting himself in the shop window.
