STAUNTON COMPLETES VILLA SWITCH

STEVE STAUNTON has completed the formalities of his transfer from Liverpool to Aston Villa on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old was told by Reds manager Gerard Houllier that he had no future at the club, and Villa stepped in to re-sign the 31-year-old defender.

The Republic of Ireland stopper spent seven seasons at Villa Park earlier in his career, and Villans boss John Gregory believes the free transfer signing is tremendous business.

"I believe it represents good business," he said. "He has massive experience, can cover a range of positions and his presence in the dressing room is always good.

"He also still possesses one of the sweetest left foots in the game. He knows he has the task of trying to force himself into a very strong defensive unit, but he is prepared for that challenge."

Meanwhile, Houllier confirmed that Igor Biscan is to undergo a medical on Wednesday, prior to signing with the Anfield club.

"The deal is practically done," said Houllier. "He is having a medical and then he will sign the contract. I expect him to start training with us for the first time on Friday.

"He is a good defensive midfield player, he is very strong and he can play in a number of positions. He will definitely strengthen our squad."

The 22-year-old Croatian international could even figure in the Premiership clash with Ipswich on Sunday.
