SCHOLAR SET FOR SHOCK SPURS RETURN?

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR could be rejoined by a blast from the past with the news that Irving Scholar could come back if Alan Sugar goes through with his decision to leave the club.

The former chairman of Spurs is part of a consortium set to bid for Sugar's shares, with their worth estimated at anything up to £50 million.

Scholar used to be a major shareholder in the White Hart Lane side but, after selling up in 1991, he moved on to become part of the Nottingham Forest board of directors.

However, Scholar's group face competition from easyJet supremo Stelios Haji-Ioannou, his family already own shares in Spurs and he could look to increase his influence whilst ENIC, a London investment firm, are also interested.

Sugar himself has stated that he will only sell to parties he considers to be suitable for the club, something that has stopped ENIC in the past and could hinder Scholar's interest.

Scholar came to the aid of Tottenham when, having won the FA Cup in 1981, they faced a financial nightmare after the rebuilding of White Hart Lane almost left them penniless.

After spending around £600,000 on acquiring proxy voting rights, Scholar managed to oust then incumbent Arthur Richardson and take over as chairman in 1982.

He oversaw Tottenham being floated on the Stock Exchange in 1983, but his partnership with Robert Maxwell tainted his term as chairman.

Meanwhile, manager George Graham has voiced his fears that he may lose his job when the new chairman takes over.

"We've got some very exciting kids like Ledley King and Alton Thelwell coming through, and more following them in the near future," said Graham.

"The sad thing for me is that I might not be here to see it happen. That will obviously depend on results on the pitch, but also the feelings of others off it."

Spurs are now the latest club to be linked with a move for highly sought-after Internazionale striker Robbie Keane, although a transfer to White Hart Lane would appear unlikely.
