SMITH SNUBS WATFORD

WATFORD striker Tommy Smith has snubbed the First Division play-off candidates offer of an extension to his present contract.

The highly regarded forward still has over a year to run on his current contract but has turned down the opportunity of committing his future to the club in return for a more lucrative deal.

Smith has scored 12 goals since signing professional forms with Watford in August 1997 and is one of a handful of players to hold the distinction of having bagged his first league goal before making his full debut after netting against QPR in 1997 after coming on as a substitute.

Watford boss Graham Taylor is anxious to provide some long-term security in the striking department as Gifton Noel-Williams' injury problems continue.
