KELLY IMPRESSES ON ALBION TRIAL

WEST BROM look set to extend the four-day trial of Atherstone United striker Leon Kelly after the youngster impressed during Albion reserves' 2-1 home defeat to Stockport.

Kelly was recommended by former Albion midfielder Steve Mackenzie, who is now manager of Atherstone.

The 20-year-old hitman forged half of an inexperienced strike partnership with former Nottingham Forest starlet Matt Turner and almost got on the scoresheet when he headed against the bar in the first half.

Turner - who joined the Albion playing staff three months ago - netted a superb solo effort in-between County strikes from Chris Byrne and Fredrik Bryngelsson

In a very young Albion side, the only player fielded who is likely to play a part to their run-in to the season was Adam Oliver - currently nearing full fitness after the career-threatening appendix injury - and he clipped the bar with an impressive free kick.

The talented midfielder will be hoping this performance can earn him a place on the first team bench as Gary Megson looks to continue his side's play-off push.

Meanwhile, new signing Phil Gilchrist - who has helped the side to seven points in the three games he has played since moving to The Hawthorns - feels Megson has some similaritites with his former Leicester boss, Martin O'Neill.

"Martin and Gary are very similar characters - they are both very fiery people when they want to be," said Gilchrist.

"They are both very knowledgeable about the game but, most importantly, they have both got that desire to win football matches, which sometimes gets taken the wrong way.

"Obviously, the gaffer likes being on the sidelines, shouting, screaming and trying to get things across to the play-ers, but only because he can't be out there and that is very similar to Martin O'Neill."
