STEWART UP FOR PFA PRIZE

IPSWICH TOWN striker Marcus Stewart has been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award in recognition of the outstanding season the Suffolk side has had.

Stewart is currently the top goalscorer in The Premiership with 19, two ahead of his nearest rivals.

His goals have fired Ipswich to the verge of a shock Champions League place in their first season back in the top-flight.

Other players nominated for the award include Arsenal's scoring sensation Thierry Henry and in a year for strikers, Liverpool's Emile Heskey.

Manchester United trio Teddy Sheringham, who has been confirmed as the Football Writers Player of the Year, along with Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane have also been short-listed for the award.

The Red Devils have won The Premiership at a canter this season and managed to make the Champions League quarter finals before falling to Bayern Munich.

A surprise exclusion from the short list is Arsenal's French midfielder, Patrick Vieira, perhaps a reaction to his continued disciplinary problems.

Meanwhile, Liverpool starlet Stephen Gerrard finds himself on the short-list for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

He is joined by Merseyside team-mate Heskey, who is up for both the senior and youth prize.

Manchester United are represented by Wes Brown, the stylish defender who has matured into a first team role.

Leeds United's amazing Champions League campaign is highlighted by Alan Smith's inclusion whilst West Ham's budding youth system has been honoured by both Joe Cole and Michael Carrick being nominated for the award.
