ROBERT TALKS ON HOLD AS PSG SEEK SUCCESSOR

FREDDY SHEPHERD'S trip to Paris to continue negotiations with Pape Diouf over the transfer of Laurent Robert from Paris Saint Germain seems to reached an impasse, with Newcastle looking to pay for the player in installments.

The Magpies` offer has been given to Diouf who has returned to consult with his client, although PSG themselves are making contingency plans for Robert's departure.

Having smashed four goals in two Intertoto Cup games against FC Jazz, Robert is in fine form, indeed his scoring rate has seen observers in France suggest that he could stay with PSG, having impressed Luis Fernandez.

With Aloisio suffering from a lack of form at this early stage of the season, along with injuries to Nicolas Anelka and Laurent Leroy, Robert has been moved into the striking spotlight.

Bayern Munich, Marseille and Lyon have all made offers that were not to PSG's liking and with so many strikers out, a transfer that had a good chance of going through three weeks ago is now in doubt.

"I'm waiting to see what Newcastle really proposes," said Robert, who has another two years to go on his current contract.

Diouf confirmed the possibility of a PSG stay, saying he was willing to talk to the club.

"If the Parisian directors feel the need to meet me, I am ready to listen," said Diouf.

Meanwhile, Luis Fernandez has used his Spanish contacts to mark Malaga's Joaquim Agostinho as Robert's possible replacement.

The 25-year-old is currently in talks with the Liga side's officials over improving his contract and extending it for another four years.

The left-sided midfielder is well known for his thrusting runs on the Malaga wing, although having settled so well in Spain, it is not known whether or not he could be tempted away from the club.
