ALBION ENTER LOCKWOOD RACE

More from Football

WEST BROM are poised to hijack Millwall's bid to sign highly-rated Leyton Orient defender Matt Lockwood.

The 24-year-old left back has recently been training with The Lions, and it is reported that manager Mark McGhee has already offered The O's £350,000 after being impressed with his contributions during pre-season.

Lockwood recently snubbed the offer of a new three-year-deal with The O's and will be available on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling next season, prompting chairman Barry Hearn to consider offers from interested parties.

Now, Baggies boss Gary Megson is believed to have upped the ante in the race to sign the ex-Bristol Rovers man by offering the East Londoners a fee of £400,000 for his services.

Following the release of 33-year-old Australian defender Jason van Blerk at the end of last season, Megson is keen to strengthen the left side of his defence in an attempt to build an Albion team that is capable of becoming serious automatic promotion contenders next term.

Megson has switched his sights to Lockwood after failing to land Bristol City`s Aaron Brown.
