MENDONCA LINK RESURFACES

GRIMSBY TOWN idol Clive Mendonca is set for a return to Blundell Park according to reports in the tabloid press.

The Charlton Athletic striker has recently returned to fitness after spending a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a serious hip injury, and recently made his comeback for The Addicks' second-string.

Should Mendonca make a return to the south bank of the Humber, it will initially be on-loan as Charlton boss Alan Curbishley looks to nurture the 32-year-old back to full match fitness.

Grimsby are currently without the services of strikers Steve Livingstone and Bradley Allen, and ex-Addicks boss Lennie Lawrence may well benefit from being able to call upon Mendonca's proven First Division scoring ability.

Recently Lawrence has been forced to field rookie forwards Phil Jevons - a summer signing from Everton - and local youngster Jonathan Rowan and, although the duo have acquitted themselves well, the introduction of Mendonca to the lineup would provide The Mariners attack with some much-needed experience.

Grimsby fans would certainly welcome 'Super Clive' back to Blundell Park with open arms after he cultivated legendary status there during a five-year spell which saw him notch 57 goals in just 151 league starts.

Whilst at The Valley, Mendonca's scoring ratio has improved to a goal in every other game, and his presence in Grimsby's front line would provide an immense boost as Lawrence's men look to cling on to their unbeaten start to the season.
