ROBERT CONFIRMS DISTIN MAGPIES MEETING
Planetfootball.com revealed on Friday that Distin (pictured) was desperate to join his former team-mate Robert at St James` Park, and the powerful 23-year-old defender appears to have been on Tyneside for talks with Newcastle.
Flying winger Robert, who joined Newcastle from PSG earlier in the summer, confirmed that his friend stayed at the same hotel as him over the weekend, but is not sure how advanced the talks are.
Speaking on his personal website, Robert said: "Sylvain Distin was present at St James` Park, and he stayed the evening in the same hotel as me.
"I know he was there to meet the leaders of Newcastle, but I do not yet know what was said at the meeting."
Robert also revealed that he would love to play in the same team as Manchester United ace Andy Cole.
The England forward has been kept on the bench at Old Trafford by the arrival of Rudd van Nistelrooy, and has been linked with a return to Tyneside.
Whether a transfer emerges is debatable, but Robert appears to like the thought of providing the bullets for Cole.
"It would be great to play with Andy Cole, it would be a very good thing for us, but we will have to wait and see as there are a lot of changes going on in Manchester at the moment," he commented.
Hamed Kavianpour, meanwhile, appears unlikely to win a move to Newcastle because of international commitments with Iran.
A deal had been mentioned, but The Magpies shelved the transfer when made aware that the defensive midfielder would miss a sizeable chunk of the season due to international duties.
