GATTUSO: PLAYERS SO SORRY FOR TERIM
RENATO GATTUSO has admitted to planetfootball that the players were shocked when popular coach Fatih Terim was sacked, and bemoaned the defensive attitudes of teams such as Liverpool.
Gattuso, who has played in Britain with Rangers before establishing himself in the Milan first XI, admits that the players were happy under Terim - sacked early in his tenure at the club.
"I did, and still would, love working with him," Gattuso told planetfootball. "It is incredible that voices have suggested that he was not good in training.
"The only thing that he did differently to any other coach was to have us playing a game every day. That was extraordinary to the players.
"I think is says a lot that even when we were struggling he had our support.
"Did you see the goal against Internazionale? Everybody ran to him."
When asked about the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti, Gattuso is satisfied, but admitted that he has begun to focus on silverware.
"The appointment of Ancelotti is okay, but I for one want to win.
"I'm in my third season here and I have yet to win a trophy.
"The desire to win is not crazy. It is very much my target, but it isn't easy.
"A lot of teams arrive to play against big teams with the intention of defending.
"This isn't only happening in Italy - every body talks about the likes of [Inter's Hector] Cuper only defending but take a look at Liverpool.
"They are defending with eight players, the mark the others in the manner of 30 years ago - man-to-man marking."
The Italian international believes that the number of games have had a debilitating effect on the squad.
"It is not easy because we have to play every three days," Gattuso stated. "What with the travelling and the games there is no time to train properly.
"I personally would pay money out of my own pocket to have more time - the only one who doesn't seem to suffer at all is Paolo Maldini.
