DI CANIO WINS FIFA GONG

PAOLO DI CANIO has won Fifa's Fair Play Award for 2001.

The West Ham striker was recognised for his 'special act of good sportsmanship' against Everton last season.

During the game Di Canio spurned a clear goal scoring chance, as Everton goalkeeper Paul Gerrard was lying injured on the floor. But when the Italian received a cross from Trevor Sinclair, he picked the ball up rather than continuing.

The game finished with a 1-1 draw, but the match will be remembered for the unprecedented piece of sportsmanship shown by Di Canio, who has now been honoured the award by the game's official governing body.
