SPARROWHAWK WINGING OUT OF TOON

DIEGO GAVILAN has completed a loan move to Mexican side Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara from Newcastle United, which could see him transfer permanently for £2 million according to The Premiership side.

The 21-year-old arrived from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno with an impressive reputation but failed to settle on Tyneside and is now destined for warmer climes.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "That would mean us getting our money back (if he was sold).

"Diego is going to a club which has two other Paraguayan players which should help him to settle down."

However, it seems this is not bourne out by the facts, which see Guadalajara a club in crisis with the future of talismanic striker Carlos Hermosillo unknown.  The 37-year-old Mexican international, with 90 caps and 35 international goals to his name threatened to retire following a falling out with the club.

It would now appear Hermosillo has not resigned to take up a job with the Mexican national side, but certainly his disagreements with the club's administrators is something that Gavilan is walking straight into.

Gavilan only managed seven appearances for Newcastle, scoring once against Coventry City, but a succession of injuries, including a broken arm has stalled his progression at St James'.
