Scally snaps up Dome bargains
The Gills made the bargain deal after learning that most of the bits and pieces that were auctioned off by the Government were not honoured or were bogus bids.
Scally has refurbished his new stand at a knock-down price and the club megastore boasts £250,000 of shop-fittings bought for just £5,000.
A £1.5 million play area of The Dome measuring 80m x 40m was bought for £70,000 and is being turned into an indoor training centre for the team.
Scally admitted he was lucky to have got all the equipment for such a bargain price.
"It was a case of being in the right place at the right time," said Scally. "I've bought tea trolleys, ovens, fire extinguishers, 300 sets of bone china, glasses and all-sorts on top of the bigger stuff.
"This has allowed us to move the club forward quicker than I had envisaged. We just kept going back to the site for more gear.
"I bought a seven-and-a-half ton lorry to transport everything and we must have made 100 trips to Greenwich.
"I've had to borrow a 10,000 sq ft warehouse off a mate because there isn't enough room at the ground for everything." Meanwhile, boss Andy Hessenthaler has decided to end his interest in trialist Liam George.
The 22-year-old striker has spent the past week training with The Gills, but Hessenthaler decided he was no better than what the club already had on its books.
Coach Wayne Jones said: ""It was touch and go with Liam. He showed some great skills and it was a difficult decision to make. But we felt it was the right one and told him to find himself another club.
"He was understandably very disappointed. But he didn't take that step forward after impressing in the reserve game against Portsmouth.
"I think he is a talented player who showed some good touches but it wasn't enough to warrant us taking him on."
