Lockwood pens new O`s deal

LEYTON ORIENT defender Matthew Lockwood has ended recent speculation about his future by signing a new two-year deal with the club.

The 25-year-old was placed on the transfer list by O's boss Paul Brush last month after failing to agree terms, and has been linked with moves to several clubs.

Millwall, QPR, Wimbledon and Sheffield Wednesday have all been chasing him, but he has now agreed terms on a new deal to stay at Brisbane Road.

Lockwood had never said that he wanted to leave the club, and has said that he is happy his future is sorted out.

"I'm glad it's all over now and I can put it behind me," Lockwood told the club's official website.

"It was all up in the air for a couple of months and it wasn't nice to be involved in because all I ever wanted to do was play football, but now it's all been sorted I can start concentrating on next season and looking forward to that.

"The offer was right for me from the start but I came back from injury too soon and I wasn't doing myself any favours.

"There's always been talk about me going elsewhere but I've never said that I want to leave. There were offers on the table for me from other clubs and I didn't want to leave just for the sake of leaving."

Lockwood had earlier been offered a new deal, only for that to be taken back during his injury and subsequent lack of form, but Lockwood says he has no complaints over the way the club have acted, and is confident he can help them towards promotion next season.

"I've spoken to Barry and Brushy and the signings they want to make sounded positive. We're not far off having a good squad that can challenge for promotion - on paper we're getting there and I think we'll be up there next season.

"When the contract offer was taken away from me, I couldn't have any complaints because I had come back too early and was playing rubbish.

"Four weeks ago I was on trial at Sheffield Wednesday not knowing what the future held in store for me and now I've put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal here and I'm happy."
