Voller considering Max call-up

MARTIN MAX is being tipped for a call-up to the German national side with Rudi Voller looking to add some firepower to a goal-shy front-line.

With Bayern Munich marksman Carsten Jancker still looking for his first Bundesliga goal after 16 games, team-mate Alexander Zickler injured and Oliver Bierhoff far from his best, Voller may turn to the 1860 Munich hit-man.

14 goals in 23 matches this season for Max makes impressive reading and Voller conceded "Max was in the back of his mind".

German assistant coach Michael Skibbe feels in-form players could be vital for Germany in the 2002 World Cup finals telling "TZ": "There are still five Bundesliga games left. Rudi Voller and myself have often called up players who are having a good run."

The journeyman forward, 33, is not getting his hopes up though after being disappointed in the past.

"Two years ago when I was top-scorer and did not go to the European Championships I was bitterly disappointed," said Max.

"Now I don't have any hopes. That can at least save me from disappointment."

Max could be called into the German squad for the friendly against Argentina in Stuttgart on April 17 if he can continue his purple patch in front of goal.
