Keane sent home from World Cup

ROY KEANE has sensationally been sent home from the Republic of Ireland's World Cup preparations in Saipan.

The Irish captain's earlier attack on the national team set-up has led to him being sent home in disgrace.

Keane had previously only decided to stay with the squad at the last minute, following a bust-up with goalkeeping coach Packie Bonner.

Keane also chose to announce his retirement from international football after the tournament, citing personal problems along with the training conditions as the reasons.

Irish boss Mick McCarthy wanted to hold a clear-the-air meeting with the Manchester United man, however it ended with Keane setting off home.

"He was a disruptive influence," said McCarthy. "I cannot and will not tolerate being spoken to with that level of abuse being thrown at me.

"This is a huge decision, but I am happy to go to the World Cup one man down rather than with a man who shows utter disregard and disrespect for me."

The news is a massive blow to the Irish preparations as they see their inspirational skipper leaving under a cloud of controversy.

Unless Ireland could prove Keane is injured, they will not be allowed to call on Celtic's Colin Healy as a replacement as the deadline for sending the squad to Fifa has now passed.

Steve Staunton is likely to take over as captain.
