Emerson tells of heartbreaking injury

UNFORTUNATE Brazilian captain Emerson broke down in tears as he told of how a freak training ground injury ruled him out of the World Cup, but insists he will stay with Luis Felipe Scolari's squad to encourage his team-mates.

The Roma maestro, who performed a key role for Scolari's side in front of the back three, has been replaced by youngster Ricardinho after dislocating his shoulder while acting as a goalkeeper in a training session on the eve of Brazil's opening match with Turkey.

Typically, Emerson refused to blame anyone for his misfortune when emotionally discussing his injury with the media on Monday morning.

"I went to see the coach and volunteered to play in goal. It was I who decided," Emerson said. "We are footballers and we are exposed to this type of thing.

"It is very difficult for me. It is very painful to not be part of the team. We're all very close and only if you are in my position can you understand how painful this really is.

"I will stay to give them my support though."

Emerson's injury reduces Brazil's chances of success as his steadying influence was the perfect counter-balance to the attacking instincts of wing backs Roberto Carlos and Cafu.

Performing in the role Emerson inherited from Dunga is now likely to be Gilberto Silva. Scolari will probably play him alongside Juninho in midfield against Turkey, although in the later rounds he may be accompanied by Kleberson.
