Okocha to quit Nigeria

NIGERIAN skipper Jay-Jay Okocha will retire from international football once his nation's disappointing World Cup campaign is concluded.

Okocha is playing in his third World Cup for The Super Eagles but has decided to call it a day.

The 28-year-old has been a lynchpin of the Nigerian midfield for almost a decade but will not be bowing out on a high note.

Drawn in the Group of Death, Nigeria wilted against Argentina and Sweden in their opening two games, rendering their final match against England meaningless for the Africans.

Paris Saint Germain midfielder Okocha admits he is disappointed at the manner in which he is saying farewell to the international scene.

"This is the end. I hope this team will mature and do better in the future," said Okocha.

"It's my last World Cup and while I would have wished it ended on a happy note, I have to accept the reality.

"In our last two World Cups, we reached the second round and I was hoping we could do the same thing here and even progress beyond, but that is football."
