Elber quits Brazil

GIOVANE ELBER has decided to quit international football after failing to make Brazil's triumphant World Cup squad.

The Bayern Munich ace had to look on enviously as Brazil landed their fifth world title with a 2-0 victory over Germany on Sunday.

Elber was one of a number of top stars surprisingly left out of Brazil's squad by coach Luis Felipe Scolari.

The 29-year-old has had his problems with Scolari ever since refusing to travel to last year's Copa America because of security reasons.

Despite the fact that Scolari is stepping down after the World Cup, Elber admitted that his time on the international stage is over whoever takes the reins.

"The subject is closed," said Elber. "When the 2006 World Cup comes around I will be 33 and I will not have the desire or the ability to play.

"Whether it's Scolari, Mario Zagalo or Wanderly Luxembourgo there is no possibility of me changing my mind."
