Schmeichel will retire in May

PETER SCHMEICHEL has indicated that he will retire from professional football at the end of the coming season, after finishing his one-year deal with Manchester City.

The legendary Danish goalkeeper was a major part of the Manchester United side that rose to prominence in the 1990s, and after a brief spell with Portuguese side Sporting came back last season to play with Aston Villa.

A move to newly promoted Manchester City came this summer, but it will be his final campaign.

"I will hang up my gloves in May when the season with Manchester City finished," the 38-year-old told BT.

"I played 25 games last year with Aston Villa and will expect to play 35 or so with City this year.

"That, I think, will be enough. And I cannot go on after that."

Schmeichel will go down as one of the greatest keepers of all time, winning five league titles, three FA Cups, one league cup and one Champions League title in his time at Old Trafford.
