Liverpool held in Horgen by Germans

More from Football

LIVERPOOL new-boy El Hadji Diouf scored his first goal in a Reds shirt as the Merseyside outfit were held to a 1-1 draw against German outfit Wolfsburg in Switzerland.

The former Lens star powered home a bullet header just before half-time after Robson Ponte fired the German side ahead after only three minutes with a sensational goal.

The vast majority of the crowd in the small Swiss town of Horgen could not have envisaged a goal of such proportions in a pre-season friendly but were treated to one of the best strikes they will see all season.

Only moments after kick-off, the Brazilian striker Ponte drilled a swerving right-footed drive from 35-yards out giving Jerzy Dudek no chance of making a save.

However, the Premiership outfit gave as good as they received and following a good effort by Patrick Berger, The Reds were back on level terms.

French winger Bernard Diomede, who was given a chance to impress by manager Gerrard Houllier, whipped in a corner from the right for Diouf to jump the highest and direct his header into the Wolfsburg net.

The second half saw a significant drop in chances as both teams made numerous changes. Houllier brought on Heskey for Owen and Chris Kirkland for Dudek.

The only real goal-scoring chance of the half fell to former Derby County star Stefan Schnoor who, like Ponte, tried his luck from long-range, however the pile-driver went well wide of Kirkland's goal.
