Cameron out six weeks
A knee specialist confirmed that Cameron damaged the medial ligament during a clash with Burnley's Steve Davies at Molineux.
The 29-year-old Scottish international will now be forced to sit on the sidelines as he recovers from the injury and told the Wolves official website of his disappointment to be injured this early in the new season.
Cameron said: "I'm obviously disappointed.
"I've enjoyed pre-season and the first couple of games and I think things are going well, so to have to miss out is a bit of a pain.
"I honestly can't tell you how it happened - but it certainly wasn't a bad tackle."
It is the first major injury in Cameron's career and he added that he hopes it will not affect his fitness for the coming season.
He added: "Apart from a pelvic injury when I was at Hearts and the odd niggle my career has been virtually injury free, so I suppose I mustn't complain.
"All I can do is hope that the injury heals as quickly as possible and make sure that I keep fit in the meantime."
