Transfer embargo placed on Lazio

FIFA has banned Italian giants Lazio from buying any more players after placing a transfer embargo on the Roman club.

Football's governing body have been forced to act as the club still owe payments to a number of clubs from dealings in the market over the past few seasons.

Manchester United claim they are owed some money from the sale of Jaap Stam in 2001, whilst Spanish side Valencia say Lazio have not fully paid for Claudio Lopez and Gaizka Mendieta, even though the latter has now joined Barcelona.

Additionally, Argentinian club Velez Sarsfield are waiting for around ‚é¼2m from the transfer of Lucas Martin Castroman last season, whilst Cruzeiro are unhappy that the Rome outfit are refusing to fork out on the agreed price for Juan Pablo Sorin.

The embargo will remain on the club until the side can fulfil its financial obligations, however it is only valid as long as the two clubs in question and their respective national associations do not come to an agreement themselves pending the transfers.

With the full extent of Lazio's cash crisis coming to the forefront, a host of the club's stars are now expected to depart Stadio Olimpico.

Italian international defender Alessandro Nesta has been linked with a host of European clubs over the summer period, whilst Argentinian striker Hernan Crespo is rumoured to be interesting Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur.
