Spurs agree fee for Keane

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR have agreed a fee of £7 million with Leeds United for Republic of Ireland international striker Robbie Keane.

The former Internazionale star, who has found starting appearances hard to come by since arriving at Elland Road, is currently at White Hart Lane discussing personal terms and undertaking a medical.

The move for the 22-year-old looks set to end a long summer search for a new striker by Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle, who has been linked with a host of big name players during the off-season.

Keane has heavily featured from the bench, during his Elland Road career, culminating in the Irish World Cup star revealing his frustration at lack of first team starts last weekend.

Sunderland negotiated a price for the former Coventry and Wolves ace over the summer, however Keane rejected the switch claiming he wanted to stay with The Whites and fight for a place in the team.

Although Leeds were keen to retain Keane, manager Terry Venables knew one attacker might have to leave in order to balance the books and to keep the likes of Robbie Fowler, Mark Viduka, Alan Smith and Michael Bridges all happy.

Venables confirmed the hit-man is on his way out of Elland Road, but denied he wanted to off-load Keane.

"He did ask to go," said Venables. "I thought he was settled but obviously he wasn't.

"I thought we would go with all the players we've got, but it wasn't to be. I am disappointed. I didn't want to lose him because I think he's a good goal-scorer.

"But it's not like we can say let's give it a month and see how it goes. Because there's the closure (of the transfer window) now, it just puts added problems to the dilemma.

"We've dealt with it and we just want to look forward. We've still got three strikers in the squad, Michael Bridges is coming along and Robbie Fowler might be back in three or four weeks."
