Keane charged

MANCHESTER UNITED captain Roy Keane has been charged with two counts of bringing the game into disrepute by The Football Association.

Both charges relate to Keane's horror tackle on Manchester City player Alf Inge Haaland in April 2001.

Keane was sent off for the reckless lunge on the Norwegian and subsequently served a suspension for the incident.

But the issue reared its ugly head with the recent publication of Keane's explosive autobiography which hinted he deliberately intended to hurt Haaland.

Those comments sparked an FA probe and they have now hit the Red Devils skipper with a misconduct charge.

An FA statement said: "The first charge is as a result of the challenge itself on Haaland, which is alleged to have been improperly motivated, with an apparent element of revenge.

"The second charge relates to Roy Keane allegedly publishing for financial profit or reward, an account of his autobiography, in which he speaks of a desire to exact revenge on Haaland, therefore bringing the game into disrepute."

Keane has 14 days to respond to the charge but is presently out of action for at least six weeks after undergoing a hip operation.

The firebrand Irishman is also facing a three-match ban for his sending off on Saturday at Sunderland when he elbowed Jason McAteer.
