Baresi - Nesta better than Rio

FORMER Fulham director of football Franco Baresi has praised Milan's signing of Alessandro Nesta, because he feels the Italian international is a better defender than Manchester United's £29.1 million capture Rio Ferdinand.

Baresi feels his old club have done good business in luring the Lazio skipper away from Rome, and at a considerably cheaper price than the fee United paid Leeds for Ferdinand, the most expensive defender in the world.

"Rio Ferdinand does not have the speed of Alessandro," opined Baresi.

"But it is difficult to make comparisons. Ferdinand would have some problems getting used to playing in Italy, while Nesta could play in England without having any problems.

"Milan have made a great raid because, at this moment, nobody is better than Nesta in Italy.

"As an example, Fabio Cannavaro is great but he is 29 years old. Nesta is young and has more of his career ahead of him.

"Nesta is a player of a great level. He has various characteristics different from mine - as an example, he is physically stronger."
