Scots scramble draw with Faroes

SCOTLAND avoided the embarrassment of being beaten in the Faroe Islands with two late strikes to grab a 2-2 draw, but the result still leaves their Euro 2004 qualification hopes in doubt after just one game.

Scotland manager Berti Vogts is still looking for his first win, since being appointed back in February.

Indeed if not for their midfield talismans Paul Lambert (pictured) and Barry Ferguson, then it could have been a lot worse for Vogts's side.

Both Lambert and Ferguson struck in the final half-hour to give their side a share of the spoils - something they barely deserved.

It was the Scandinavian minnows who dictated the pace for much of the game and they took the lead after just seven minutes when they converted with their first attack.

An innocuous looking cross came in from the right, but a frantic looking Scottish defence failed to cope and John Petersen headed easily past Robert Douglas.

It was Petersen, a 32-year-old school teacher, who then doubled his country's lead just six minutes later.

The B63 Torshavn striker again got on the end of a right wing cross, but this time he volleyed brilliantly past Douglas.

Scotland did not look like getting back into the game, but they did just after the hour mark when captain Lambert saw his shot ricochet into the net.

However, the Faroes almost retained their two-goal lead just a minute later, but Douglas produced a brilliant save to prevent Jakup Borg from getting his name on the scoresheet.

A frantic Vogts then had his blushes spared when Rangers ace Ferguson pounced to give Scotland a share of the spoils.

Elsewhere, World Cup runners-up Germany moved to the summit of Group Two with a comfortable 2-0 win over Lithuania.

Michael Ballack, who missed the final in Korea and Japan through suspension, fired the visitors ahead on 26 minutes, before a Marius Stankevicius own goal just before the hour mark sealed the points.
