Shilts overlooks his own mistakes

PETER SHILTON has come out and criticised David Seaman for his gaffe against Macedonia, claiming the Arsenal man should quit, but the former England international appears to have a short memory.

Seaman was deceived by a corner that floated straight into the top corner, and Shilton has urged him to quit.

Shilton, though, appears to have forgotten that he made a similar mistake during his lengthy England career.

Seaman is now 39, and it was at a similar age that Shilton made his error.

During England`s 3-1 defeat to West Germany in Dusseldorf on September 9, 1987, the keeper allowed a Pierre Littbarski (pictured) corner to fly over him and into the net.

Shilton, 53, is England`s most capped player, having made his debut for England at the age of 21, but he seems to have overlooked a mistake of his own in criticising Seaman.

Seaman has made a string of errors, notably allowing Ronaldinho`s free-kick to drift over his head during England`s defeat to Brazil in this summer`s World Cup.

Shilton says Seaman should have gone after the World Cup, but feels he continued in a bid to atone for his howler in Japan/Korea.

The former Nottingham Forest man followed his own beliefs and retired after a major tournament, the 1990 World Cup finals, but he left on a low note.

He was criticised by many for allowing Andreas Brehme`s deflected free-kick to loop over him as England slipped to defeat in the semi-finals, ironically at the hands of West Germany.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has over four months to decide who starts in goal for the next game, but he is unlikely to be influenced by Shilton`s comments.
