Oli calls it a day

OLAFUR GOTTSKALKSSON has reluctantly announced his retirement from football after failing to recover from a shoulder injury with Division Two side Brentford.

The 34-year-old Icelandic international decided to accept the advice of a shoulder specialist and hang up his boots after first suffering the injury in December last year.

Gottskalksson joined The Bees from Scottish Premier League side Hibernian in the summer of 2000 and made 89 appearances for the West London club, becoming a popular figure amongst the Griffin Park faithful.

On his decision to quit the game, Gottskalksson told the Brentford official website: "I would just like to say to the Brentford fans, it has felt like home from day one.

"It's been like that since the start, and having those nice comments from the fans also.

"They have never got on my back, and always supported me.

"I will really miss the 'Oli' song when I leave.

"I would like to wish everyone all the best; it's a great club."
