Burgos quits Argentina

ARGENTINA goalkeeper German Burgos has announced his retirement from international football.

The Atletico Madrid shot-stopper revealed he had informed Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa of his decision.

The 33-year-old was Argentina's first-choice keeper up until the World Cup finals but was somewhat surprisingly relegated to the bench in Japan and South Korea with Celta Vigo's Pablo Cavallero being installed as Bielsa's number one.

Burgos, who won 34 caps for Argentina, revealed he looked back on his times with the national team with a special fondness.

"I want to give thanks to the Argentine team, to Bielsa, to the staff and to everyone who accepted me as a player and a person," said Burgos.

"I had some beautiful moments there."

The eccentric goalkeeper now hopes his decision to call time on his international career will help him extend his career at Atletico.

"The injuries I've had recently have been down to all the travel," said Burgos. "Now I'm going to dedicate myself to Atletico."
