Rooney wins BBC honour

EVERTON striker Wayne Rooney has been named the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.

The 17-year-old has burst onto the scene this year with some dazzling performances helping Everton into the top six in The Premiership.

Rooney, who came to the nation's attention with a wonder goal in the 2-1 win over Arsenal last month, was eligible for the BBC award for those aged 16 or under this year.

He is regarded as the brightest young prospect in football and is tipped for a big future on the international stage for England having already been called up to the Under-21s side.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger picked up the coach of the year award after leading the Gunners to the double for the second time in four seasons.

Meanwhile, Manchester United legend George Best has been honoured with a life-time achievement award.
