Stack proves a knock-out for Beveren

ARSENAL goalkeeper Graham Stack has made himself a hero at the Gunners' Belgian feeder club Beveren after knocking out a marauding fan from arch rivals Royal Antwerp.

Stack, who is on loan at Beveren from Highbury, grabbed the headlines in Belgium following Beveren's 3-1 by laying out one Antwerp fan as a group ran on the pitch near the end of the game to confront him.

The 21-year-old shot-stopper had been subjected to a torrent of abuse during the game, with various missiles - including a lump of steel and a knife thrown at him.

Stack revealed that he only hit the fan to protect himself and admitted that the whole situation had got a bit out of hand.

"We had just gone 3-1 ahead and, out of nowhere, I saw all these fans running at me. They'd managed to break down one of the gates," Stack told The Sun.

"One bloke approached me and I told him to get off the pitch. I had to push him away from me for my own protection.

"Then I could see someone else running at me and it was obvious he was not going to stop. I swung at him out of self-defence.

"I didn't him that hard but he must have been drinking because he went straight to the floor. The next thing I knew, there were riot police everywhere.

"They came on with their shields and dogs to try to calm things down because it was a bit mad.

"Thankfully, the game was ended at that point and we were all taken off the pitch."
