Heaney forced to retire
The 31-year-old Middlesbrough-born wide man made over 150 league appearances in his career, for a host of clubs including Arsenal, Manchester City, Darlington and Dundee United.
Heaney made a handful of appearance for Plymouth during their promotion bid last term, but has finally been forced to hang up his boots.
Pilgrims manager Paul Sturrock was gutted to hear the news regarding the speedy veteran, as he looks to build upon his side's solid start to life in the Second Division.
"It's very disappointing news for Neil," said Sturrock to the club's official website.
"This is something that has gone on for a couple of years and it's flared up again.
"We wish him all the best for the future."
