Rui Costa plays down Benfica rumours

MANUEL RUI COSTA has played down fears that he could leave Milan for former club Benfica.

Reports on Monday suggested that the skilful playmaker was keen on a return to Benfica, but the 30-year-old revealed he has no intention to quit Milan.

The Portuguese international insists he is happy to stay at Milan until his contract expires in June 2005.

Rui Costa admitted that he still has a lot of affection for the club where he made his name, but that he was not thinking of a move until he sees out his deal with Milan.

"I simply reminded the fans of Benfica that I would like to finish my career at Benfica," Costa told the club's official website.

"It is not news. Naturally I will plan the end of my career after June 30 2005 when my contract with Milan ends. I am very happy at Milan and have never had even a minimal intention to leave the club.

"Naturally, when you talk about this argument in Portugal everyone gets excited, I know.

"It has already happened and will continue to happen. Yesterday there was a climax to the excitement when Luis Figo was interviewed by telephone.

"All of this, however, does not change by even a comma the truth, which is that I am happy to be at Milan and want to remain at Milan, without doubts and without problems."
