Emerson regrets Boro exit
The dynamic Brazilian joined Middlesbrough in 1996 and was part of a famous trio along with Juninho and Fabrizio Ravanelli - which attempted to turn Boro into a European force.
However, Bryan Robson's dream never came to fruition and all three departed after Boro lost two cup finals and were relegated in the same season.
Emerson went AWOL on two occasions before his departure for Tenerife and at the time many fans were angry with his actions.
He is though, now, remembered fondly by many of the Teessiders' faithful and a possible reunion with Juninho has been mooted, although this would seem to be unlikely.
The 30-year-old, now starring in Atletico Madrid's midfield, has admitted that he should have stayed in the North East.
"I did cause problems for the club but I was young and it is different now," admitted the Brazilian.
"I was shocked when they got rid of me but I realise I gave them no choice.
"I made a mistake and should have stayed."
