Shearer scoops Player of Decade gong

ALAN SHEARER has been named Premiership Player of the Decade at the PFA awards.

The Newcastle United ace scooped the Domestic Player of the Decade and Outstanding Contribution to the FA Premier League awards earlier in the month.

Fans from around the world cast votes on the Premier League`s website, after a shortlist of candidates was selected by an expert panel.

After receiving his award, Shearer said: "It is a tremendous honour to have been voted the Overall Best Player in the FA Premier League over the past 10 seasons and I would like to sincerely thank all of the people who were kind enough to vote for me.

"Given the number of top-quality players who have graced our league since its inception, it really fills me with immense pride to have been given this award."

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore, who presented the award, said: "It was always going to be a difficult choice for those supporters who voted when you look at the Overall Team of the Decade, with the likes of Cantona, Adams, Desailly, Vieira, Scholes and the rest.

"Alan Shearer stood out over our first 10 years because of his enduring quality and phenomenal goalscoring record. The fans obviously felt this and I think that everyone will agree that Alan is a deserving recipient of this award.

"I am particularly pleased that we have been able to present Alan with this award at a fitting occasion, in front of his peers at the PFA Annual Dinner and Awards."
