Flowers retires

TIM FLOWERS, one of the best goalkeepers ever to grace The Premiership, has retired at the age of 36.

The Leicester City man made a fleeting farewell performance in the match against Wolves on Sunday, and now plans to embark on a coaching career.

After starting out with Wolves, a £70,000 move to Southampton in 1986 helped propel the son of former Molineux legend Ron, into the public eye.

Some stunning displays for The Saints marked Flowers out as a keeper of real class, with one remarkable display in an FA Cup triumph at Manchester United particularly memorable.

Moneybags Blackburn Rovers paid £2.4 million for his services back in 1993, and he lifted the title with the Ewood Park outfit, whilst further enhancing his reputation.

Leicester signed him in 1999, and loan spells with Stockport County, Coventry City and Manchester City have followed, but injuries have taken their toll on the smart shot-stopper.

Flowers was capped 11 times for England, and seemed delighted to have ended his career in the match at Wolves.

"I thoroughly enjoyed it on Sunday," he admitted. "It was ironic that it finished where I started it all."
