Shearer hungry for success
The Magpies finished third in last year's Premiership race, after challenging the top two for most of the season, and the former England international knows it will take hard work to compete with the Premiership heavyweights in the forthcoming campaign.
He told Sky Sports: "It's going to be a huge season for us. We had a great season last year but we need to improve if we are going to interrupt the double placing of Arsenal and Manchester United.
"It's not going to be easy but it won't be for a lack of trying. The manager is working on a couple of signings and we'll certainly give it a right good go."
Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked with big-name signings over the summer and the 33-year-old is hopeful that Sir Bobby Robson can compete in the transfer market, and attract top players to the club.
"We're big enough, we're in the Champions League - we have the ground and we're confident we can give it another good go.
"We're not promising anything but we'll work very hard and see what happens."
