English side fail with record Nesta bid
The Rossoneri's vice-president Adriano Galliani confirmed that they had shunned the huge offer which was lodged by a Premiership side on Wednesday.
He did not reveal which side had made the offer, but only a few English clubs could even consider such a bid.
"Yesterday [Wednesday] I refused an offer of ‚é¼50 million for him [Nesta]," revealed Galliani.
"The offer arrived from an English team, about this I can confirm that our intention is to strengthen the team.
"We consider our champions intransferable."
Sources in Italy are now looking at who the bid might have come from and the names being suggested are Newcastle and Chelsea - both of whom could afford the record-breaking deal.
Manchester United and Liverpool could also set up such a deal, but neither seem to be in the hunt.
Newcastle have already stated that they would move for any player, no matter what price, if he would improve their side.
They have lodged a bid for Ronaldinho in recent weeks and although that looks doomed to failure, it shows their intent.
Many on Tyneside feel The Magpies need another central defender to partner Jonathan Woodgate and Nesta would certainly fill any gap they had in their back-line.
However, Chelsea could very well be the club to have tried to lure Nesta away.
The Blues now have the financial backing of their new billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and have the resources to match any club in world football.
The bid may well have been made to show the Stamford Bridge faithful that they really do mean business.
William Gallas is still to commit his future to the club and with Marcel Desailly likely to quit the club next summer, another defender may be on Claudio Ranieri's list of targets.
Also in Italy, Chelsea have been linked with moves for Juventus pair Edgar Davids and Marcelo Salas.
Again sources are suggesting that, with their new found wealth behind them, The Blues have sounded out Juve about the prospect of landing the duo.
Ranieri is reported to be a big fan of both the Dutchman and the Chilean and could tempt the Turin giants with an offer close to £10 million.
