Cole is our new Zola - Ranieri

CHELSEA boss Claudio Ranieri has hailed Joe Cole as Chelsea's new Gianfranco Zola.

West Ham star Cole is in talks over a move to Stamford Bridge after the clubs agreed a £6.6million fee for the England international.

Ranieri is a big fan of Cole and feels he can fill the void left by Zola's departure back to Italy.

"Without Gianfranco, I need a player who can dribble - and I think Joe Cole is that kind of player," said Ranieri.

"In my opinion, he can play in any midfield position from the left to the right, or behind the front two.

"He's not signed yet but I hope he arrives. He's fantastic one-on-one. He's very clever and passes the ball very well.

"I like him when a match is close. He can dribble, pass and score a goal. He's strong and an Englishman.

"When I arrived, I said I'd like a blend of young English players and experienced players. Slowly, slowly, that way is possible."

Meanwhile, New Chelsea signing Geremi believes his versatility gives him an advantage in securing a regular place in Ranieri's side.

"I am used to playing in central midfield and the manager knows I can play there, so what I can play there, so what I do is work hard and wait for the manager," said Geremi.

"I am used to playing anywhere. If the manager likes that, you are happy because every time you are going to play.

"It's an advantage to play many positions."
