Nakamura receives Becks tribute

REGGINA midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura is as good as David Beckham when it comes to taking free-kicks, according to Yokohama F Marinos goalkeeping coach Dido Havenaar.

Havenaar, who is used to seeing Nakamura score spectacular goals from set-pieces during his days at F Marinos, believes the 25-year-old Japan star is definitely up there with the world's best.

"He is perfect," declared Havenaar.

"You have Beckham here with Real Madrid, and you can compare Shunsuke with Beckham.

"Shunsuke is one of the best in the world with his left foot.

"He strikes a beautiful free kick, with a lot of curve and with perfect technique. It's very difficult to catch."

Nakamura's free-kick ability has already earned him plaudits in Italy, including praise from a Naples-based newspaper which compared him to football legend Diego Maradona after he scored a sizzler in a friendly between Reggina and Napoli last year.

He then showcased his talent in June's Confederations Cup, scoring a brilliant free-kick against France that left Manchester United keeper Fabien Barthez grasping at thin air.
