Stoke unhappy with O'Connor tribunal

More from Football

STOKE CITY are disappointed to be receive a £250,000 transfer fee from fellow First Division side West Bromwich Albion for midfielder James O'Connor following a transfer tribunal decision on Monday.

The 23-year-old moved to West Brom last month after going out of contract with The Potters but Stoke were entitled to a fee because the Irish starlet was under 24 years of age and not eligible for a Bosman free transfer.

The Britannia Stadium club will initially receive £250,000 over the next six months for O'Connor, with £125,000 coming in immediately for the midfielder.

The decision from The Football League appeals committee has disappointed The Potters, with chief executive Jonathan Fuller believing the binding fee to be 'a steal'.

"The decision is final and binding to both clubs, there is no right of appeal," Fuller told the club's official website.

"We feel for a 23-year-old with his experience the fee is a steal.

"Three years ago, Albion offered £750,000 for him and since then he has played 150 more games and established himself in the First Division."

The breakdown of the payments means that £62,500 will be paid each in October and January but Stoke will also be entitled to receive an additional £25,000 after O'Connor makes 15 appearances for Albion, with another £25,000 being paid after 30 appearances.

The Hawthorns club are also entitled to pay another £50,000 should make O'Connor earn his first full Republic of Ireland cap and pay a 10 percent sell-on fee should West Brom sell the player for over and above what they paid Stoke for him.

West Brom have also learned from the tribunal that will have to pay Second Division side Wrexham £50,000 for signing teenage midfielder Rob Davies.

The Dragons will also receive four payments of £40,000 each for the 16-year-old -based on the number of first team appearances he makes for The Baggies in the future.

The Racecourse Ground club will also get an additional £40,000 should the youngster earn his first full international cap for Wales in the future.

The tribunal decision has also declared that if Davies moves on from The Hawthorns, Wrexham will receive a 15 percent sell-on fee.
