Elber joins Lyon

GIOVANE ELBER has agreed to join Lyon on a two-year contract in a ‚é¼4.2 million deal.

The Bayern Munich marksman will replace Sonny Anderson as l'OL look to retain the Ligue 1 title for the third successive year.

Although Monaco were also keen on the Samba striker, Elber has explained his decision to join the French champions.

"Lyon have just won the last two national titles and have some ambitions in the Champions League," he told L'Equipe.

"But it is true that contact with Monaco was at an advanced stage.

"In a way, Monaco led for 88 minutes. Then, in the last moments, Lyon scored the decisive goal by being more professional.

"Bayern have always been a very professional club.

"A new forward arrived during the summer (Roy Makaay). I had the feeling I'd had my time at the club.

"So I decided to change air and to move on.

"I come to Lyon to help this club succeed and achieve even better things than during the last seasons.

"I know perfectly well that Sonny Anderson wrote a beautiful page of history at Lyon, and people won't forget him in a hurry.

"But I feel strong enough to wear the number nine shirt. I am at Lyon to succeed at least as well as Anderson."

The 31-year-old could make his debut in the clash with Guingamp.

"Physically and mentally, I feel ready," he added. "I am perfectly fit."
