REAL MADRID - ONE TO WATCH - JAVIER PORTILLO

PROLIFIC striker Javier Portillo is the heir apparent to Raul's crown at Real Madrid as the darling of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd.

Both players' careers bare similar characteristics in their rise to prominence and in their goalscoring exploits, but they differ in their style of play with Portillo viewed as a goal poacher while Raul is more of an all-round striker.

Portillo has had incredible pressure on him ever since he was a youngster after his incredible feats in the Real Madrid youth team.

He has even outscored Raul for the youngsters, netting over 700 goals since joining Real as an 11-year-old.

Almost inevitably, Portillo scored on his Madrid debut in March 2002 against Panathinaikos, but he probably scored his most important goal to date in the draw against Borussia Dortmund last season, which ensured Real's progress in the Champions League last year.

The clinical finisher is behind Raul and Ronaldo in the pecking order but, with Fernando Morientes departing to Monaco, this could be the season for Portillo to take the next step up in his career.
