Fulham sign Dutch starlet

By Gerrit van Leeuwen
Fulham have signed highly-rated Dutch striker Collins John from Twente Enschede, according to the Eredivisie club.

The Premiership side have money to spend following the sale of Louis Saha to Manchester United and have already brought in United States international Brian McBride.

But Whites boss Chris Coleman has not stopped there by teeing up a deal to capture the 18-year-old prodigy.

The two clubs reached agreement regarding a fee, which is less than the ‚é¼6 million (£4 million) mooted in the Dutch media, on Friday evening.

John will sign a four-and-a-half year contract with Fulham as Twente admit the offer was too good to refuse given their current financial plight.

Technical director Johan Plageman told the club's website: "The financial situation of FC Twente means this is a good matter for the club.

"But, on a sporting level, we regret the departure of Collins. We all wish him great success in the United Kingdom.

"Concerning the transfer fee, we are making no statements but the amount which has been mentioned in certain media is absolute nonsense.

"The amount is considerably lower."

John has been one of the revelations of the Eredivisie season and has netted nine goals in 18 appearances for Twente.

Born in Liberia, the teenager holds Dutch nationality and has already figured for the country's youth teams.

He has been watched by Manchester City this term but Fulham have moved to pip their Premiership rivals to John's signature.

Fulham have acted swiftly to wrap up a deal for the young forward before the closure of the transfer window.
