Materazzi apologises for scuffle
Internazionale defender Marco Materazzi has apologised for striking Siena's Bruno Cirillo following the side's 4-0 victory on Sunday.
The former Everton stopper, who was not even part of the Inter squad that triumphed at the Giuseppe Meazza, feared he would be struck so retaliated.
"There is nothing to say," said Materazzi. "I'm sorry it happened as it is a thing that didn't have to happen.
"In the tunnel before the dressing room I've seen Cirillo come at me. I feared a scuffle could happen and so it has.
"I feared he could hit me and I reacted. I'm sorry. It's normal I will have to pay for what happened."
Materazzi has every right to fear a punishment as the club's new president Giacinto Facchetti has stated the Serie A side will likely take action against him.
"Materazzi is destroyed and doesn't know what to do. I'm not interested in how it happened, but the club will surely punish him," stated Facchetti.
Cirillo explained Materazzi waited for him after the game and struck him in the face.
"He broke my lip," fumed Cirillo. "He waited for me and he gave me a fist.
"I want to tell everyone, so the people know who Materazzi really is."
