Wrist injury forces Bartram retirement

Gillingham goalkeeper Vince Bartram has been forced to retire after failing to recover from a broken wrist injury.

The 35-year-old was sidelined with a compound wrist fracture when he collided with Millwall custodian Tony Warner in the dying stages of a 4-3 home victory over The Lions on September 6.

The injury forced Gills player-manager Andy Hessenthaler to sign Frenchman Bertrand Bossu on a two-year deal.

In late October, Bartram's recovery suffered a setback when he had an infection in the injury.

His failure to fully heal from the wrist problem has prompted the veteran of 356 league appearances to hang up his gloves at The Priestfield.

"My wrist isn't up to it, I can't even catch a ball," said Bartram.

The former Wolves trainee enjoyed spells at Bournemouth and Arsenal before signing with The Gills in March 1998.

The news means Hessenthaler will likely look for a new keeper after Nico Vaesen returned to Premiership side Birmingham City following a loan spell.

Meanwhile, the Gills boss has revealed that defender Richard Rose has likely done enough to earn a new contract at the club.

Rose is out of contract at the end of the season but Hessenthaler looks set to sit down with the player and discuss a new deal.

"Richard was excellent - he's out of contract at the end of the season and we'll have to decide what we're going to do but he's done himself no harm at all after that performance," Hessenthaler told the club's website.

"We'll sit down with him in the next few weeks and talk to him but it just shows that you need a squad."
