Winter's discontent at Fergie

Jeff Winter has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson's claims he should have nipped the Old Trafford flashpoint in the bud before Gary Neville headbutted Steve McManaman.

Manchester United full back Neville was sent off in the first half of Saturday's FA Cup fifth round tie against local rivals City.

Neville was shown the red card for headbutting McManaman after the pair squared up following the United player's attempt to win a penalty.

Referee Winter allowed play to continue after the penalty incident, a decision which incurred the wrath of Red Devils boss Ferguson.

The United chief felt Winter should have halted play as soon as he felt Neville dived, rather than allow the advantage to the visitors.

But Winter is adamant he made the correct decision not blowing the whistle immediately, before showing Neville a yellow card for diving and then a red for his attack on McManaman.

"He is entitled to his opinion but the ball was still in play and I was allowing an advantage to develop," said Winter.

"Then I had to deal with what happened afterwards.

"Yes, I'm happy with the way I dealt with it. There wasn't a lot more I could've done."

Meanwhile, Neville is confident his misdemeanour at the weekend was a one-off and understands Winter's decision not to award the penalty for his theatrical tumble after Michael Tarnat's challenge.

"I made a mistake on Saturday but I am not going to beat myself up about it," Neville told his column in The Game.

"I am annoyed with myself because I will be suspended for some important matches but that is the only reason to regret what happened with Steve McManaman. It was out of character and I am confident that it was a one-off.

"Firstly, I was 100 percent convinced at the time that I deserved a penalty.

"Now that I have seen the replays, I can understand why the referee did not give it but the defender caught my shins and missed the ball completely.

"When I got up, three City players were rushing towards me. I pushed them out of the way but McManaman brushed his head against mine.

"When he came towards me again, I pushed my head forward in expectation of him doing the same. I have no problems with the referee's decision because it looks like a headbutt."
