Ailton agrees to Qatar offer

Brazilian Ailton is set to accept a lucrative offer to play international football for Qatar, the Werder Bremen striker revealed on Wednesday.

Ailton has never featured for his native Brazil despite being a regular plunderer of goals and he was approached to represent Qatar last month.

It would appear progress has been made, as Ailton has claimed he is ready to wear the shirt of Qatar.

"I have had a talk with the national coach of Qatar and everything is settled," Ailton told German daily Kreiszeitung Syke. "I will agree to their offer to represent their country."

Despite his outstanding form, which has seen him net 20 goals this season, the 30-year-old has never featured for the Selecao and is therefore available to accept the chance of playing for Qatar.

Rich businessmen in Qatar are determined to guide the small Gulf country to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany and provide the cash to make talented players, who have not featured for any other national teams yet, switch their nationality.

Ailton, who has already agreed to move to big-spending Schalke 04 next season, will put pen-to-paper under the contract which makes him a Qatari citizen at the end of the week.

"On Sunday after our away game at 1860 Munich, I'll be on my way to Qatar, where I'll sign the contract," declared Ailton, who is expected to earn around ‚é¼2 million for his signature.

Ailton's decision to represent Qatar at international level will not sit well with his new club Schalke 04 as the Royal Blues will now risk losing their new star for a couple of World Cup qualifiers, while it is expected to influence Borussia Dortmund's Brazilian left back Dede who had received a similar offer.
